Migrants Warned About Agents
May 16, 2003
Immigration lawyers have warned newly arrived migrants to check the qualifications of immigration agents before seeking advice from them.
The New South Wales Law Society says immigration agents currently only have to complete a short course and often have no legal qualifications.
The Law Society’s president, Robert Benjamin, says immigration solicitors complete the same course but also must hold a degree in law.
Mr Benjamin says immigration lawyers must carry compulsory indemnity insurance and are more rigorously regulated than immigration agents, making them more accountable.
